Newb question on setting up a wireless network

OK, so I really know nothing about setting up a wireless network. I have an airport express, a fairly new macbook and a gateway desktop with only 1 ethernet port. I want to get internet to both computers. I tried using a linksys wireless router and hardwiring the pc while using the wireless for the mac, but I never was able to get the net. What am I doing wrong and how can I get it to work?
