Newb: Viewing attachments in incoming email

Attachments appear as icons in incoming emails but . . . pdf documents then spring open within the email.

Can this be turned off ?

You might want to have a look at this plug-in. It's shareware, but I don't remember what the limitations are on the unpaid version.
