Newbie Choosing between Applications/Widgets

How do you guys decide between the different available applications/widgets with so many out there. I looked at the macupdate site that was referred to in another thread, and was curious to see how do you guys choose?

Which system monitor/temperature monitor do you guys recommend?

For system monitoring iStat Pro. For everything else, try a few and see what you like.

I prefer the new iStat menus for my system monitoring. I like to always see the status without having to go to a dashboard widget.

As for all other software, just try them out or do a search in this forum. Recommended software has been discussed many, many, many times.
