What does it mean when the Icon is semi-transparent?

That is it. The funny thing is I have never deliberately used Hide but maybe when I did something in the application, in this case Lotus Notes, it put it into Hide. This brings up another question. What is the difference between Hide and Minimize?

Minimize the window goes down next to the trashcan. With Hide it don't.
