Newbie question for mts file

Hey,

Recently bought my first mac

Installed the yosemite beta without any problems. I have a Sony hd cam and when i import mts files using the playmemories home software, my imac seems to automatically create a mp4 file of each file that is imported.

Is this something normal? With what software do you import your video file into your mac?
