Newbie question re iPad 2 and old iPod touch?

I am being given an older iPod touch, and want to know if it will sync to my iPad2 via the iCloud? Since I began to save to the cloud, I haven't synced my iPad to my computer when getting new apps. So if I get this iPod, will I need to sync it once to the computer and then will it pick up what's on the cloud? Or shold I sync the iPad to the computer and then proceed to sync the iPod?
