Newbie Tethering Question

To enable free tethering on iphone does it need to be jailbroken AND unlocked or just jailbroken? I ask because I have iphone 4 w/ ios 4.1
and suspect that the jailbreak will be available long before the unlock
of the new baseband (did a little homework).

Jailbroken only.

Unlocking is only if you want to use the device on another provider.

Thank you for quick answer!! Thought that was the case but
wasn't sure. Didn't realize they were 2 different things till the other day.

Follow up. I fortunately have one of the old unlimited unlimited data plans.
Is there anyway that ATT knows you are tethering and yanks your unlimited
rights. Having to go to the 2 gig / mth plan is one of the reasons I would
never even consider paying the $ for the ATT tethering plan. I definitely
want to keep my grandfathered unlimited plan.

So far they never bothered anyone that was unofficially tethering.
