When an item is deleted, it goes in the trash. However, as far as I can see, this breaks the link between the item and where it was. There doesn't seem to be an place where you can say 'undelete', so while the item can be restored by dragging it somewhere (I'm presuming this is how you are meant to 'undelete'?), that doesn't help you put the item back exactly where it was, if you don't know that.
Is there a way to put a deleted item back to where it came from originally, or find that out? Or is this a TM function?

These is no way of doing this yet (although it appears to be coming in Snow Leopard). You simply have to drag the item back to where it came from. Of course if you don't know where it came from this is a bit of an issue...
