Hi folks,

I keep it short and simple.

I want to upgrade my new iMac from 16GB to 48GB of ram.

Currently I am using 2 out of 4 slots with 8GB each (1600 MHz DDR3)

Here are my two questions

(1) Can I have 2x8gb and 2x16gb in my iMac or should i do 4x8gb?
(2) What kind of RAM should I buy? What is the best RAM (amazon link preferred)

Thanks and enjoy your day

And where do you think to buy 16 GB RAM sticks, they do not exist yet, that is, the iMac uses the same RAM modules as Laptops and there are no 16 GB for them yet.(AFAIK)

Do 4x8 The ivy bridge processors in the Imac has a internal memory controller that can only handle 32GB of ram.

Looks like its xeon time for you! The only i7's that can support more than 32GB of ram, are the i7 extremes(desktop variant). Other then that, Xeons support more then that(except the E3 versions). Only the Mac Pros have xeons, in apple's lineup.

Definitely not happening right now. Even if the iMac could support that amount of RAM, there aren't any 204 pin modules larger than 8GB. Either get a CL11 2x8GB pair, or replace all of it with 4x8GB 204 pin Corsair Vengeance ~ http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-Desktop-Memory-CMZ32GX3M4X1600C10/dp/B0068ZWZY0

Hi Chris. I'm sure the others have answered your question but I have one for you. What type of work are you doing where you need to use 48GB as opposed to the 32GB that the iMac can handle? I'm just curious. Thanks.
