Hello,
I've finally got a new Mac after 10 years of just using PC's since uni! This new MacBook is a sexy piece of hardware and I should get a good tan from this 30" monitor! Wow!

In general all is great, but I'm having a slight problem sometimes where when I save files they are not appearing on the desktop (and possibly in other locations). The files are there, I can see them if I go to the terminal and do an ls -la and if I reboot the computer they show up where I saved them on the desktop (I think if I kill finder they will appear as well).

Has anyone else had this problem?? My machine is the latest MacBook Pro with OSX 10.4.8 .. The only other things I've been running are QuickSynergy (to share the mouse and keyboard from another computer across the LAN), Remote Desktop Client, SteerMouse and Firefox.. everything else just standard installed apps...

I'm not sure when it starts happening, after running for a few hours, I go and save a file and it happens. I've tried using a few different apps, and no matter which I use, the files don't appear (you also can't see them if you get a finder window up either).

Thanks for any help!
David

Ive had this exact same problem.

If you open a finder window, the strange thing is that you can find the files there. I'm not sure how I got mine fixed but it went away after some time, and no longer happens now. It must be a bug of some description.

Thanks for the response. My problem is slightly different in that even if I open up a Finder window, the files are not visible there either! Applications can see them and can be listed in the terminal window but not in the Finder anywhere.. (or desktop, which I guess is part of Finder as well)...

Do they "suddenly appear" if you make a new folder or drag in another file on the Desktop (or the affected Finder window(s))?

I'll let you know when/if it happens again... I know they showed up when I killed Finder and it automatically restarted and presumably picked up the files..

Pop in your OSX DVD and reboot from it. Go into Disk Utilities and repair your start-up drive. Disappearing files means your disk needs some minor repairs. :)

luv ya bunches! xoxoxo

Thanks for the reply :) Hmm I'm not sure if the disk would be to blame as the files aren't actually vanishing, they are still there are visible through terminal and also applications, it's just as if somethings gone wrong and finder isn't being notified that there are new files (because if you restart finder it umm 'finds' the files..)..

I've been running a few hours now and still going strong.. It's done it twice previously so I'll keep my fingers crossed it was just some sort of weirdness that's gone away!

hehe shucks, I luv ya bunches too! I told my friend a new MacBook Pro would make me irresistible to the ladies.. ;)

try changing view options

My missing icons appeared when I went to view->show view options, and then adjusted the grid size. New files saved since then have appeared normally.

Not sure yet if it's a permanent fix, but it's worth a try. P.S. I'm on leopard.
