I'm about to take the plunge and replace my 08 MBP with an a new i5 15" but I'm not sure whether to go for it, as I'm not sure whether to wait for the next update.

Does anyone know when this will be?

Check out the buyers guide, it says that the product is in mid cycle. Buyers Guide
So yes, you should probably buy now as they received a big update in April of this year.

Only Apple knows But considering that the last update occurred not too long ago, I think it's a good guess to assume Jan '11.

Early 2011, but if we're lucky, there might be an October/november (2010) update, but 2011 is more likely.

Only Apple knows their roadmap for model updates, anything posted here will be pure speculation.

If you really need a new computer now, just take the plunge buy one, and enjoy it.

Buy it, if they update, just sell it since it'll be in good condition still. Also, you get a free ipod touch
