Can't find it being mentioned in the English world... perhaps this feature has been mentioned already in the Chinese-speaking communities...
but anyway, i've found this feature back when they first added Chinese input to the iPhone. you can write simplified Chinese characters and the phone will still interpret it and outputs traditional Chinese characters. quite handy for many users who need to text quickly in traditional Chinese
I don't have a MBP but maybe the multitouch trackpad can also do this.
