Hey there, Apple Watch fans! šŸ‘‹šŸ»

So, my Apple Fitness+ subscription is currently on hold because I can’t seem to get a new trial code that works. I’m waiting on AppleCare to respond.

I’m going to have to switch over to some third-party apps to keep up with my workouts. I’m thinking of trying out Nike Run Club and Nike Training Club, which are both free. Plus, I’m planning to keep up with my bodyweight strength, core, yoga and Pilates classes using the Headspace app, which I snagged a lifetime license for from a mental health organisation for young people.

I was wondering, since Nike Run Club also tracks runs from your iPhone, do you think it automatically pauses if you stop running or start walking? I’m wearing an Apple Watch, and I’ll still be carrying my iPhone, but I usually do most of my runs and walks on the treadmill when it gets chilly and rainy. Will it pause if I leave my iPhone in my pocket while running, or do they detect that from the Apple Watch?

Also, can you play music from apps other than Apple Music and Spotify on Nike Run Club and still hear the guided runs and walks? I’m using a third-party app called Musicana on my iPhone 15 Pro, which is kind of like the old Musi. Cheers! šŸ‘‹šŸ»

You know you don't have to pay for Apple Fitness+ for recording workouts, right? It's just for instructional videos. Or did I misunderstand what the point of those other apps are?

These are guided workout videos.

Nike Training Club is the same thing. Nike Run Club is for running but audio runs like fitness+ time to run.

Have given Nike run club a try yesterday morning, the audio runs use my Apple Watch for tracking my runs primarily. So at least I can leave my iPhone on the table or in another room charging when I run with Nike Run Club on the treadmill.

It’s all good now.

You can set it to pause or not when you stop running. I can't garauntee you can play other apps and hear them in the background but I would assume so, I use Apple Podcasts (and have used Apple Music) and they still work, their volume is reduced slightly when the guided part of NRC is playing.

I have had iOs mess things up with updates before - both apps won't run at the same time or controls don't work but it usually gets resolved in updates so not the apps fault.

Got it. Ima try it out again with the First Run on Nike Run Club. Do you track it iPhone only or you wear Apple Watch and start the run from there?

I usually only use my Watch as I like to take as little as possible but I have used both on the same run. If I use both I start it on my phone (as that has cellular access so can access all streaming music) and it will show on my watch - pick up heart rate.

The NRC app is a little easier to use on the iPhone (can favourite guided runs) but I prefer just a watch. I absolutely love the NRC app, yes I admit it’s not as tailored/personalised as the Garmin apps (and the batteries last a LOT longer) but I am also not a pro athlete, I don’t run ultras, I don’t go off grid so I want a watch and app that fits my running goals and is useful the rest of the day (and a S11 fits that).

Same I’m not an extreme athlete or ultra runner. I primarily run on the treadmill at the gym or at my home gym.

I did also play some YT music from Musicana and did a Nike Run Club run yesterday and it worked. Actually since runs are downloaded separately on each device I have to start playing my music on my iPhone and then start a run I downloaded on my phone. Unless if the music app you want to use is in Apple Watch then the same thing applies if you start it on the Apple Watch, however have your AirPods on if you don’t have an Apple Watch Ultra 2 or series 10 or later to play music directly on it.

Coach Bennett guidance did actually lower the volume of my music šŸ˜‚.

If you start the run on your iPhone and you want to leave the phone in your pocket, on the treadmill console or in your gym bag it’s absolutely fine as the Metrics and workout controls are still on the Apple Watch.

P.s. the run will track in the background and will show a live activity on your iPhone so if you prefer leaving it on the treadmill console or on the arm band you can still see the metrics.

That’s great. Yes it does lower the background volume when guiding (and turn it back up when not guiding/talking) and I really like this.

It’s a great app and I have found the guided runs so useful. I have been following the half marathon plan (just to change things up) and when the distances get a bit longer the guided runs are invaluable to me - no staring at 10 miles and talking myself out of it etc plus, I must have listened to ā€œjust another runā€ 100 times!!

Like fitness+ I do a different episode every time I do the guided runs and walks on Nike Run Club. Unless if you do all the audio runs, I’d rather have variety to add both challenge and also make it fun to run.

I am going to do the 2025 Chicago Marathon episodes in the app, like Believe in the Run and three other episodes. Some episodes of the audio guided runs you can earn special badges for doing them.

So you can listen to any music on the app, I highly recommend doing it from the iPhone btw.
