I was pretty sure I wanted an 18-70mm Nikon lens, but then I read some more reviews, and now I am thinking that the 18-55VR might be just as good. My biggest problem with the 18-55 is that it has a smaller range, and its distortion dissapears at around 25mm, while the 18-70mm has a larger range and its distortion goes away quicker. Another issue that I see is that the 18-55 VR does not do so well in manual focusing, has anyone tried it?? If anyone owns these please offer some advice?

When I owned my D70, I purchased the 18-70 lens and absolutely loved it. Currently, my girlfriend has the Nikon D40 with 18-55 and it's just a piece of plastic junk. I'm sure Nikon improved a little bit on the 18-55, but not so much of it's build though. The 18-70 is built better, and probably has less CA (chromatic aberration) than the 18-55 does.

If you want better glass, go with the 18-70. However, if you want VR in your lens, then go with the 18-55. Quite honestly, I shoot with my body on a tripod 99.9% of the time, so IS/VR is worthless to me. Put in your situation, I would go with the 18-70 hands down.
