I recently heard that the Nikon D700 was being discontinued. Could there possibly be something better coming out in its place?

I seriously doubt it. It was introduced just a year ago, and this reminds me of the brief rumor earlier this month about the 5D Mark II allegedly being discontinued.

Even if it's replaced, it will continue to be a phenomenal camera.

Nah, don't think so. Unless D700s will take over (same MP, slightly improved higher ISO and video), I expect the D700x will be the D700 w/ high megapixels like D3x, so I expect the price of the D700x will be around D3.

Nikon might tweak the D700 with an "s" version and will probably supplement it with an "x" version, but given how they're selling and how long the typical Nikon development cycles are outside the pure consumer cameras, not a chance.

I doubt it'll be discontinued because it's relatively new. However i suspect a price drop which will be great as I want to get a D700 for my assitant.

yeah, I don't get it why this year suddenly everyone wants to see pro body upgrades....I even heard something about D4

I just purchased one, so it'll probably be replaced shortly. And with my luck it will be with a camera with more resolution, less noise, faster FPS, faster AF, video, and come with the 24-70 as a kit lens, all for $1,000.00 less than I paid for body only.

That's how it generally works for me.
