I'm not getting the red laser out of the optical audio port. When I insert a optical cable, the system detects a digital audio interface and gives me the option to select it, but does not output any audio. A analog patch cable or internal speakers work fine. I'd hate to take it back in to a genius just for an audio problem, so I thought I'd check here if this is a common thing and a simple fix.... which I doubt.
I am currently running 10.11.6
The optical interface worked fine for a couple years until one day about 4 months ago when it was dead. I traced that to a broken fibre (new kitten likes to chew on cables).
Replaced cable and things were fine until a month ago where I started hearing a crackle once in awhile, like a lose analog connection then it went dead. Took a look at it today, tried a couple different cables but then noticed no red light... hmm... could the laser be dead? The system report says the built in digital output is working at 44100 sample rate.
I ran a search but haven't found anything for the nMP.
Thanks
