How do I turn on/off the 3G data? Do I just do it through cellular data? I'm PAYG and don't want a big bill running my credit down.

3G refers to the third generation mobile data speeds, which can no longer be selectively disabled with the iPhone 4S. Whether it's 3G or 2G (GPRS and EDGE), you still pay the same amount for the data.

From the sound of it, you want to avoid an excessive data charge with your PAYG SIM. You can disable 'Cellular Data' in Settings -> General -> Network, which will stop the iPhone from sending or receiving data over the phone network.

That means the iPhone will only make/receive calls and texts. Is that what you're after? You'll still be able to use wi-fi for Internet access, of course.

...but you will still be able to use wifi. I have PAYG on my iPhone and it works great, I just turn on cellular data when I really need it.. You may also check General->usage->cellular data in the settings to keep track.
