Hello. I just set up my iPhone 12 Pro. I noticed it said 5Ge where it used to say LTE. So, I did a little research about weather it should be on or not. I noticed in video that the guy had the options for “5G on, 5G auto, LTE” On mine I only see the options for “LTE and 4G”. I don’t see the 5G auto option or 5G at all for that matter, although I see it up near the battery on the Home Screen. I’m curious why? Seems like 5G auto would be the best setting. Any help would be great. Thank you.

It would be under Settings-Cellular-Cellular Data Options if your plan includes 5G. 5Ge is a “fake” term that AT&T has been using in place of LTE in some areas. It’s supposed to be a more advanced LTE. It’s not 5G. Those options won’t be there if you’re not paying for a plan that includes 5G.

Ok thanks. So I guess it’s not really 5G then. In my settings the “LTE” is check marked and like I said, when I was out and didn’t have wifi, it said 5Ge instead of LTE as my last phone always said. So I’m on LTE in settings but it’s showing 5Ge next too the battery on the Home Screen. I guess that’s false advertising lol

In the US, 4G and 5Ge are both fake. 4G is supposed to have a speed of 1Gbps when stationary/walking and 100Mbps when moving. You'd be lucky to get near 50Mbps on a good day with great reception, that's why you see the words LTE (Long Term Evolution) after 4G, because it's not real 4G. For all the years 4G LTE has been available it's never really "evolved" because US consumers are numb and so used to being suckered, no corporate accountability. Expect the same ******** with 5Ge. Current 5G is stated to have up to 10Gbps, in the US we'd be lucky to get close to 1Gbps in the best conditions.

Countries that will have true 5G will be East and Southeast Asian nations like China, S.Korea, Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, etc.

Your plan doesn’t include (real) 5G. You have to call AT&T and upgrade if you want to use it.

I think you're missing the point, even if we upgrade to a 5G plan, coverage is next to non-existent (in the US) and even if there was coverage it's not true 5G speeds like we see in Asia. We never had true 4G speeds that's why it had to be labeled 4G LTE, what makes you think we'll have true 5G speeds???

No, you are missing the point. OP asked why the 5G option is missing from Settings. My answer is the correct reason. Your answer is a comment about whether 5G is worth paying extra for, which is not what they asked.

Ah you're right, I was thinking ahead. He would have to buy a 5G plan and I was thinking it's not real 5G even if the option to upgrade to a 5G plan was available.

So, I called ATT and it’s that I’m on an older plan and 5G isn’t an option for me. I’ve been on an unlimited plan for the last 23 years or so and im
Grandfathered in. I was told by my brother in law who used to work for ATT to keep this plan as long as possible.

I see a lot of 5G around me and I'm not in some big city. Saying coverage is next to non-existent is a gross exaggeration.

Are you in the US? If so which state are you in and do you have speed test results? If it's not near or above 1Gbps it's not 5G.
I said next to non-existent, compared to East and Southeast Asian countries that started mass rollout of 5G throughout the entire 2020 while majority of western nations were in (still in) lockdown, the US is behind in 5G by at least 2-3 years.

I’m in the Midwest US. 1Gbps is limited to mmwave 5G. Sub6 is slower but it is still 5G.

I think you understand the situation at this point. I’m not trying to decide for you whether it’s worth it to give up your grandfathered plan - that’s your decision.

I can tell you that AT&T has a nasty habit of just stealing grandfathered plans if you don’t give them up voluntarily, and I know that sounds hard to believe, but I have concrete proof that it happened to me, and many other people have alleged that it happened to them as well. But nonetheless, feel free to make your own choice.

I’m sorry that that was your experience with ATT; however, your statement is not a fair assertion. I‘ve been with ATT and was grandfathered for years with my original plan with Cingular (2004), but I was never pressured to switch or given the impression that they would ”steal [my] grandfathered plan.” Like you, I know of many family and friends who have the same experiences with ATT as I did. I made the choice to upgrade my plan about 4 years ago when I realized that I could get more for my money with the offered services that were of benefit to me, and it was actually cheaper.

I have a question. I’ve also been grandfathered in to my plan. I’ve been with ATT (Cingular prior?) since around 1997 or so. I have the “unlimited plan” that I’ve had since I got my first phone in 97ish. I was told by a family member to never get rid of my plan for whatever reason. In the past att has tried to convince me to change my plan by saying i only use this many gigs etc. and telling me I can get a cheaper plan, but I never change because I feel like they are trying to take away my plan lol. Is there something different about the old plan I’m on compared to current unlimited plans and is it actually worth changing? The thought of having unlimited data makes me feel better.

ATT offers 3 different tiered unlimited plans. You might want to look at this ATT site to view what might work for you/your family and compare the added services over what you currently have. Once you review the 3 different unlimited plans offered, speak to a rep who will be able give more detail and an estimation of what your monthly bills will be.

For me, the Unlimited Elite plan offered exactly what I needed in the way of Personal Hotspots especially since the app, Tether, was no longer an option. Example, my base Grandfathered plan was $29; the current base unlimited plan is $30 with more services offered over my original plan. For me, it was definitely worth changing plans.

You should still be able to receive 5G on your plan. You just have to ride their ass about this. They will tell you "it's a slow process going one plan at a time. They are not throwing a switch to enable everyone at once."

They are trying to frustrate you into upgrading. Get ahold of the Loyalty Department. Push until you get connected. They will resolve the issue if you still have it. It's allot of effort however. AT&T is the worst. Period.
