No Airplay icon?!?

I don't have a device to stream music/video yet, but I can't find the airplay icon. Do I need a device for it to show up when I'm playing a song through the ipod app on the iphone 4? It's not at the bottom where the fast forward button is like people have said. Do I need to turn something on for it to appear? I've downloaded the latest software.

airplay icon only appears when the iphone detects a compatible airplay device (ie an appletv).

I also had to restart my iPhone for the AirPlay icon to appear. So if you have AirPlay compatible devices in your house that aren't showing up, try that.

Mine didn't show up (AE speakers) until after a reboot of the phone.
