No artist data when adding older quicktime movies to itunes

I have most of my vids on a shared drive and when I add them to the iphoto library - the artist field is blank (10% of them) - I can add that info in in Itunes and have in the past - When I move my vids to another drive, cleared the link in itunes and added them back the same older vids did not carry in that artist info - so I am guessing that it WAS Itunes that was storing the arist info and NOT the vid file itself - limited metatags data?

should I convert these older vids (quicktime) a newer format (??) that will remember more meta data ?

I really thought I was editing the info in the file in the past.... apparently not.

any suggestions ?
