iPhone XS Max No auto pair when switching AirPods from Apple Watch to iPhone?

Question, I like how when I put my AirPods and start playing music on my apple watch it automatically switches from the iPhone to the Apple Watch, but with the other way I have to keep going into Bluetooth settings to select the AirPods...
Am I doing something wrong here? I’m a bit annoyed on how far we have come but we still have to switch between devices when using AirPods to enable them.
 
When both the devices are close to each other, and the AirPods are already connected to one then how do you suppose it’ll work out which device you’re trying to use it with? Isn’t it better to let the user decide?
