No bluetooth speaker volume control?

Seems that a useful feature would be the ability to control a wireless bluetooth speaker's volume from the iPhod connected to it.
Are there reasons why we can't? Or just Apple being funny?

It seems that the volume controls on the iPhone itself are disabled when it is connected to bluetooth headphones. I have tried to different brands of headphone, one with a volume control (which did work), and one without (where I discovered that the volume controls on the iPhone are disabled). Hopefully this can be corrected in a future OS update.
