I checked the iOS API documentation and we will definitely be seeing apps for this, probably very soon.
There's a way to get not only relative climb and descent, but also the actual atmospheric pressure from the sensor.
Apple just didn't provide a built in "toy" app to play with it, like they have in the past with the accelerometer, compass, magnetometer, gyroscope, etc.
