I've just returned my second no-contract iPhone for problems with persistent freezing. By freezing I mean that I would get a black screen when waking the phone from sleep mode; the freeze could only be resolved with a two-button reset.
I should reemphasize, these were no-contract phones; they were USA phones purchased at an Apple Store and locked to ATT, but the "phone" was non-functional because I did not sign/purchase a contract.
Each iPhone 4 was running iOS 4.1; no jailbreaking software was ever used. The micro sim was never removed or activated. On the second phone, I prevented the annoying "waiting for activation" notice from popping up by using it in airplane mode with WiFi turned on.
An observation that may not be pertinent: most if not all freezes occurred when I had left home. The phone would be in sleep mode when leaving home; upon pushing the sleep/wake button I would get a black screen that could only be remedied with a two-button reset.
Another note: I don't believe that it's an app problem because, 1) the freezing occurred on the first phone before I bought new apps and it was only using apps that had run flawlessly on my 2G iPod Touch, and 2) on a number of occasions the phones froze when there were no open apps in the multitasking drawer.
I have tried resetting, restoring and even erasing and reloading all content, but I would still experience freezing.
At this point I'm waiting to repurchase, hoping that iOS 4.2 will help.
Any thoughts or remedies? I'm open to all suggestions but I'd be especially interesting in hearing from folks who have a no-contract USA iPhone 4 that remains locked to ATT.
Thanks in advance!
