How do you sleep the Mac by short keys since there is not an Eject button?

I assume you are talking about Control Shift Eject?

I ended up using a hot corner to put the display to sleep.

CMD+OPTION+EJECT puts a Mac to sleep, that is what the OP is talking about.

OP, you could press the power button and it should go to sleep if you set it to in the Energy Saver preferences. But I don't have an MBA to test though.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

I use the hot corner myself, but the button works just as well.

On a Mac with a regular keyboard Control+Shift+Eject sleeps the display only. I use the shortcut all the time, except on the new Airs.
