No Firewire = No Bootable Backups?

Last I checked Macs were unable to boot from an external USB drive. Does that mean that the FW-less Macbooks can't use bootable backups, or has that changed? If not, is Apple going to fix this before removing Firewire from the pro lines?

Last I checked they could. I only have USB2 drives and it lets me boot off the external drive...

PPC macs don't boot from usb, Intel Macs do.
