I was listening to a Vector podcast, a Q&A on the HomePod. Rene said one thing that stood out - you can only trigger songs/playlists/albums via voice, otherwise you have to use airplay. Meaning there is no true software interface for picking songs on a Mac or iOS device.
To me, this kind of seems a bit crappy and a bit of an oversight. If I am playing something on my AirPods after coming in the house, I want to be able to "pass off" my music to the HomePod, but have it completely take over the playback - meaning if I open Instagram on my iPhone, the video audio doesn't shut down the music and start playing IG audio over the HomePod. Hopefully this is something Apple has on the radar for iOS 12, or maybe in a smaller update later this year.
With my current Sonos setup I have the opposite problem - I want to play things from Apple Music via voice (through Alexa) but I can't, because they don't support Apple Music. So I have to pick things via iPad/Mac/iPhone apps. It seems HomePod will give me the voice support, but not the software control.
