No image hyperlinks in Mac mail

I am trying to add hyperlinks to social media (png) icons in my Mac mail signature. I've tried command K while clicking on the image. I've tried edit, add hyperlink. I insert the url but nothing actually turns the png into a working link. I'm using Catalina 10.15.7. Can anyone let me know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!
