I upgraded to the iPhone 5 this weekend, which replaced my 4.

Question is...shouldn't iMessage still work on my old phone? The way I see it, it's acting like an iPod Touch at this point. Why shouldn't it work?

What's the deal? Does it still work for anyone else?

If you upgraded, that means the SIM in your 4 was deactivated, so it can't connect to data. iMessage would still work, but you need to be connected to wifi.

Yeah, I realize that it wouldn't work without wifi, but even at home (when I'm connected to wifi) it doesn't work. Gives me an error like it's not connected to anything. Hmmm.

Have you looked in Settings > Messages to make sure your old phone still has iMessage enabled? You likely won't be able to receive iMessages sent to your actual phone number, but you should still be able to send/receive iMessages to/from any email addresses you may have associated with your Apple ID.

I found the problem. The iMessages app was still associated with my phone number, not my email. Once I associated it with my email it works great.

Thanks!
