no indicators on dock icons

Sometimes when I boot into SL there are no indicators on the dock icons for open apps. And sometimes when I boot into SL there are indicators. Why are they sometimes there and sometimes not?

Also, I have it set to minimize windows to the dock icon as opposed to making a new icon. This stopped working as well.
