Just a thought: would Apple be saying "2011. The year of iPad 2" if they were planning on releasing another new iPad later this year?

IMHO, doing so would definitely undermine Apple's credibility.

iPad 2 was just announced. I think the talk about iPad 3 is pretty pointless.

I think you should hold out for iPad 5.

I think Apple, in their own way, addressed it via this image:

This tells me that their focus this year is on the iPad 2. I expect them to take the next year to work on the iPad 3, with goes along with recent reports that some engineering decisions originally intended for the iPad 2 had to be put on hold due to supply issues.

I can easily see a major overhaul of the iPad 3 (likely with a retina display, improved CPU, GPU, and probably memory as well), but not in the fall of this year, rather March of 2012.

Agreed. iPad 3 won't come out until 2012. iPad 2 will sell and Apple won't have a problem with that. If supply issues are true, there could be a wait to even get your hands on an iPad 2. These will sell. No need to update in the fall.

I'm betting on no fall update.

However, I bet the plan is to closely watch how the other new tablets sell.. if for some reason IPAD 2 sales start tanking... ipad 3 early.. if not.. let ipad 2 ride till next year.

Those in the know have already said to expect an update in September.

Yup! I heard from a buddy that knows this guy who's uncle worked at a grocery store that was once visited from an Apple retail store employee that they are updating with a new iPad in September.

"2011: Year of iPad 2" clearly means no iPad 3 in 2011. Apple wanted to make sure all the "iPad 3 in 2011" rumors were killed by that slogan once and for all.

Once again, no iPad 3 until March-April 2012.

I have to disagree. If there is anything that we learn from the Star Trek movies, other than the similarities between Steve Jobs and William Shatner's ego, is that success only follows even-numbered sequels. So, you should buy iPad 2, but wait on iPad 3, and follow-up on iPad 4. iPad 5 may be a sleeper, and not worth being fanboy excited over.

Every iPad gets progressively better.... if you keep waiting for the next update then you'll never get to enjoy these great products.

Why is anybody taking this rumor seriously? Apple would not release another iPad six months after a major redesign.

The whole thing about iPad 3 in September was about a different model of iPad, like a pro model.

The iPad 3 was the same as the SD card slot, thunderbolt and retina display stories, concocted by rumour mongers and are still being banged on about by the anti apple fanboys using them to show exactly how rubbish the iPad is.

No new ipad in 2011...
you will have to wait till 2012 like the rest of us... maybe gruber will make one "special" for people who believe him, like those fancy new clothes that the emperor wears in the children's book
