I wanted to get an iPhone and I have friends who have them and say they pay $60 - $70 a month for thier plans w/ unlimited text messageing...(unfortunately I haven't seen these friends in awhile or I'd ask how)

...but....

Looking at ATT's site today I see you have to pay $30 for data plan, the cheapest minutes plan is $40 and unlimited texting is $20 + tax and mystery fee's that ATT used to charge when I used to have them itll come out over $100 a month. Is there a trick to texting on the iPhone that people are using to avoid paying for unlimited texting?

Maybe they're on family plans?

Dang : / I wont be able to do family plan. I just wanted the thing to write apps for lol. I understand I can write them and test for an iPod touch but I wanted to try out the iPhone first hand since I plan on developing games for it.

I guess its not too much more then my regular cell phone bill : /

Thank you :)

I figured I could probably do something like this. This is how I text people from work (I have no cell phone where I work but gmail to phones works great :) )

I think Ill skip the unlimited text.

My iPhone bill is $80 with $10 for unlimited text. I think when it's all said and done it comes in under a hundred but not by much.

So it is possible.

You guys really do get stuffed with your iPhone tarrifs in the USA don't you :eek:

$100 is £68.20 by todays exchange rate.

I pay £24.86 per month for 600 minutes, 500 texts and unlimited data ;)
(normal rate is £35 but I get a 30% discount on line rental through my Wife's employment)

I'm shocked at the thought that you have to pay nearly £70 compared to my £25, that's nearly three times as much as I pay.

I pay 94.60 a month with:

450 Minutes- 39.99
Unlimited Data- 30
Unlimited Messages-20

Adds up to 89.99, with taxes 94.60

I'm pretty sure alot of people have this plan, pretty weird nobody has posted about it.

I pay 160 for 2 iphones with 750 minutes and unlimted texting.. so around 80 a month for each iphone .. we dont go over our minutes eaither

Do you guys get free minutes that can be used on nights/weekends?

The cheapest AT&T iPhone plan comes with 5,000 of those minutes (in addition to the 450 daytime minutes). Every other AT&T iPhone plan comes with unlimited nights/weekends.

Also, there's no fee for landlines to call wireless phones in the US.

Actually, when I get my next iPhone, in November, I plan on getting MobileMe and dropping Unlimited Texting and using Push. This makes texting so much cheaper. :D

Thankfully I'm on a family plan so it's just $10 + $30 for me (already have unlimited family plan texting on there).

What is the fan discount and how do you go about getting it.?
It's essentially a business discount. You need to be affiliated somehow with a business/school/something-like-that and AT&T will give you a discount off of your monthly service.

That plan is great, assuming everyone you plan on 'texting' uses MobileMe also. If you're like me, 90% of your friends don't have an iPhone, and won't remember to send you a free email instead of a text. :D

would like to know how you only pay 4.61 in taxes ???

I pay $60 Canadian (so roughly $50USD) for the following:

* 6PM Early Eve. Calling Option
* 1000 Eve/Weekend Minutes
* 100 Weekday Minutes
* 500 Incoming Minutes

* Call Forward/Trans.Pay Per Use
* Partial Detail Billing
* MY5 + 5 Add'l Numbers Bonus
* Unlimited Text Messages
* iPhone Data Access 500 MB
* Visual Voicemail
* Caller ID

I used to have 6GB of data, but when I had that I was paying roughly $85-$90. Then Rogers came out with a package that included 500mb of data, text messaging, caller ID and all those lovely features for a low price so I took it because I never even went over 500mb of data. Saved myself a lot of money ;)

I have unlimited text and after taxes my bill is $81. That's including a 15% discount though.

yep phone companies **** on American consumers big time. In America we have to pay for incomming calls on cell phones. That is the caller and recieved both pay for the same call. Greed greed greed by US companies.

yeah i realize this but have you ever seen only 4.61 total of taxes and fees ?

i have never been under 15.00....even when i had a 60.00 plan....:eek:
Yuck, where do you live? :eek:

I'm in VA and only pay $4.27 in taxes and fees.

I'm on the 450 minute plan, unlimited data, and 1500 text messages, plus a 20% FAN discount, so it nets out to around $75 total.
