No keyboard in messages

Hi all. A friend just got an Apple Watch and was surprised to learn that there should be a keyboard available to type responses to messages. All she has is a space to trace letters with her finger. I tried googling but could find how to enable the keyboard, so I turn to the wisdom of this forum. Can anyone help?

Phone and watch both updated. Still no keyboard. So weird.

Apple chose not to offer the keyboard on the SE and SE 2. However, I just saw a YouTube video on this issue and it showed how an keyboard app available in the app store called Flick Type works. I believe there is a one time payment.
