Anyone else experiencing this with iOS 16? I used to be able to easily zoom in and out in Photo's markup mode to grade students' homework but now it's no longer working like it used to. It doesn't seem to register the two finger motion so it just ends up drawing lines on the screen when I pinch to zoom in. It kinda works when I switch to the eraser but even then it's not as fluid or smooth as it used to be. Anyone else seeing this?

Pinch to zoom works for me in the Photos app and also testing with a Safari page. I'm sure how to help you though.

Yeah, zooming when just viewing pics in the Photos app works fine, but the problems occurs (for me) in the markup mode, is that what you tried as well?

Yes, that's what I had responded to. In markup mode it works. On a side note, I can't imagine grading student homework on an iPhone.

ok thanks. Hmm...I rebooted and tried again, it's kinda working but definitely only registers 1 finger like 2-3 out of 5 times. So sometimes it'll zoom (especially after moving around with 2 fingers before pinching), but definitely not working as smoothly as it did back in iOS 15 :/

I’m having the exact same problem. I used to be able to easily zoom in or navigate to different parts of a photo, but now, it ends up drawing lines or marks on the picture. Like you, I tried using the eraser &, while it’s better, it doesn’t always work or I feel like I’m fighting to get it to zoom in. And I just tried using the eraser to move a picture that I had highlighted parts of & it erased parts of every highlight that I mistakenly touched. I never had a problem before I updated to IOS 16. I tried hard resetting my phone a couple times, but that didn’t help. I’m hoping Apple will fix it in the next update.

Ok. I think I found a workaround. Before trying to zoom in, choose the lasso tool (it looks like an Apple Pencil), then zoom in/navigate as you normally would. Hope that helps!

Don’t erase your mistakes, use undo instead.

Yes and it’s driving me absolutely bonkers 😩 I use markup to do crosswords I’ve screenshot and I’m going to have to download another app now because it’s hopeless now. Just like you, it works sometimes, but most of the time I just draw a line with one of my fingers. Had no issue before upgrading to iOS 16. Hopefully they fix it soon. It was perfectly fine, I’m not sure what they’ve done.

Same here. When I select edit/markup, I can’t pinch to zoom in/out. Pinching just leaves marks on photo. It’s like the phone leaves multitouch mode in markup.

Just to say I'm having this exact same problem too, the pinch to zoom in Markup mode is now very hit and miss ... it sometimes works, but only after drawing 20 lines across the image first! 😫

Suggest we all report it here:

Thanks,

This is doing my head in. Marking up captured images is a task that I spend hours on each day …. well I used to. Now it works on one photo somewhat then takes minutes trying to either move the page around or I got stuck with 100’s of lines from when I have tried to pinch the page to zoom in or out without the image adjusting, that I have to go back to erase. Only happened when I stupidly updated the software this past week. Damn Apple you are idiots.

Have sent them my grievances. Frustrating as anything for me this botched update for this particular feature I use on the iPhone more than 2 hours a day.

Thank you for that temporary fix. It works for me! I use the markup tool a lot. I’m running iOS 16.2, and that hasn’t fixed it.

Yes, that's what I had responded to. In markup mode it works. On a side note, I can't imagine grading student homework on an iPhone.

Unlike the ”old days” (I’m only 49 LOL but I can relate) papers, grading books, etc can get lost or damaged. By doing these things through methods like this, those lost and/or damaged things aren’t lost or damaged. Also, instead of taking piles of papers and books back and forth since teachers end up doing a lot of this at home, everything they need is available to them to work on any time they’re available. Plus no more carrying different colored pens! LOL Even though a phone may be small, it’s still very useful in this sense, and keep in mind that the “plus and Max” phones are big. I call them a “mini iPad mini“ because they’re about half the size of the iPad mini 😊

Hi not sure if you guys found the fix . This has been so frustrating to use but I just found the fix. I’m a surveyor and rely on markup for my day to day job.
Apple added a feature called draw with finger. When selecting the markup tools- press the three dots and switch off draw with finger. Should now revert to how it was before ios16. Hope that helps all.

Pinch/zoom doesn’t work reliably using assistive touch since iOS 16. There’s a misalignment problem: the finger position to pull the zoom handles doesn’t coincide with the actual handle positions. And worse: you can’t tap the “blob” to dismiss pinch/zoom.
