Hello,

I just updated my 2007 AL iMac (that's not a typo) to El Capitan and ran updates. (Don't worry: I backed up the prior 10.10 Yosemite drive to an external disk and tested before doing this.)

The first thing I noticed is that Mac Mail 'launches' but I cannot get a Mail Viewer window to appear.

I can create a new message (cmd-N, etc) and the editor appears, plus the app's menu bar is visible and functional. I've only had one monitor so there's no sign of it having been 'pushed off-screen' anywhere.

Adding to the mystery: After I select File > New Message View, when I return to File menu, the options to "Close Window" and "Close All Windows" are disabled. When I start a new message, those options are visible.

Therefore, I believe there's a major 'glitch' in Mac Mail somehow that won't allow it to open the Message View to see my inbox, et. al.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Thank you.
Start up in single user mode (cmd+S)
then repair the boot disk (/sbin/fsck -rf)

maybe try running "DiskWarrior" on the drive if you have it.

If none of this helps, try downloading the 10.11.6 combo update and run it against your installation again,
it might overwrite any corrupt files and fix your issues.
Then there is always a clean install and migration assistant.
edit: just a thought...
I've had success in the past using "Pacifist" to extract and install single applications from Apple installation img's,
including from OSX install packages.
Might be worth a try.
