I'm currently in Asia and recently I went to the Apple store to try and buy an Apple Store gift card, but was told they no longer offer physical gift cards. All store gift cards are online/digital only? Apparently they started doing this recently but nobody can tell me why.

Now I'm wondering if this is just a new thing in Asia or have they stopped selling physical gift cards elsewhere around the world? Our local grocery/convenience stores only sell iTunes gift cards and I've never seen store cards sold anywhere else here. It's a bit odd to stop selling them so suddenly I think.
