No Mouse on Startup?

Sometimes when I startup my Macbook Pro Retina there's no response from the touchpad (or wireless mouse). Has anyone else experienced this? It really gets on my nerves as I have to force a shutdown/restart and for some reason you can't log on using the keyboard like you can on a windows pc.

For what's it's worth happened on my GFs MacBook Air last week, she showed me the message which said no KB was found.....I thought it was a hardware failure, restarted the machine and worked fine. Another software bug that's been introduced.
