Although the feature is enabled in beta, Apple documentation states it will be disabled when released to customers.

That was the main reason for me to finally buy an iPad.

Seems like a lame excuse more than a real reason. There's always the possibility it gets implemented in a later release as it has happened with other features such as multitasking.
To get upset over pressing a button instead of using a gesture, that's very disturbing. Just stick to a notepad and a pen, and you may find your own true happiness.
 
This has turned from being one of the most anticipated upgrades I was looking forward to, to one now I can't even be bothered about.
