No notification if not a contact in my phone?

I'm about to make an appointment with the genius bar, but I thought I'd try here first...

If you're not a contact saved in my phone, I don't get a notification sound when you text me. Is this a known problem? Is there a fix or should I just take it into Apple?

Settings > Notifications > Messages > Show Alerts from Everyone -- is that enabled?

Try changing your notification sound to something else at least temporarily and then back to what you want, see if that might fix it. That aside, the usual restarting the phone and even perhaps resetting network settings or all settings might be worth a try if needed.
