I don't get the "ok to disconnect message" on my 4G iPod; it just goes straight into the main menu, instead. Is this how it should be? I preferred the "ok" message for peace of mind..

Did you get the new update?

If yes, this happed before...

1) you can restore.
2) you can make sure iTunes isn't automatically ejecting the iPod by checking if its still there. If it is, just click eject.

I don't know any other ways...

You can hold MENU and PLAY to reset it also.

So is IS supposed to show this message? It has never shown it since new, so I wondered if it had been abandoned for the 4G.

i never had it on the 4G, but if the ipod is booted into fw disk mode, (by at the apple screen on a reboot holing down enter and play) it will show the message.

It's normal. From memory, mine (a 4G) goes straight to the main menu. It might flash with the 'OK to disconnect' message first, but only momentarily.
