NO!!...Old PC connects three times faster than new iMac

I've had a brand new intel iMac for about two weeks and I just hooked up my old XP box (800Mhz P3) to the same wifi BTHomeHub with a little USB wifi stick! And unbelievably it's getting three times the connection speed that my Mac is. What can I be doing wrong? I've got the PC running Safari. Any help would be great.....rob
