It's often possible to have a FedEx/UPS ship to a local FedEx/UPS location. Look into that if you are worried. That said, by default, in every case where I have ordered an Apple product of significant value online, a signature has been required. This dramatically reduces your risk. I really wouldn't be concerned about it.

Also, not surprised by this at all. That's a whole extra layer of logistics and the stores are going to be so busy with people trying watches on and such. I can't imagine them wanting to load this surge of purchases on top of that.

I don't really get..

Beginning on April 10th, customers will be able to visit an Apple Retail Store, try-on various Apple Watch collections, and reserve a unit to be purchased and picked up beginning on April 24th

vs

Unlike with past iPhone and iPad launches, the Personal Pickup service that allows a person to order a device online and pick up at the store will be unavailable, but this may change in the future as inventory becomes more widely available.

I guess you can still pickup in store at least..

I am not that surprised. The stores should have a decent number of the Sports models in popular colors but it would be tough to stock a lot of everything.

I am lucky that my Fed Ex truck always hits my neighborhood at the same hour every day so it is not too tough to be here.

Will have to see. I hope. If not I am shipping it to my office. Don't want to miss my Watch on April 24th, waited long enough for goodness sakes.

Am I reading the article wrong because I don't see anything about not being able to preorder for in store pickup, just that it wiill be hard to walk into an Apple Store on the 24th and buying one without preorder.

There may be a subtle distinction between an actual online order and in-store pickup vs. making a reservation to try it on. In the former, it is waiting for you and you can pick it up whenever you want, since you've already paid for it. I think with the latter, they will set one aside, but you need to come in at the scheduled time and purchase it then.

9 to 5 Mac just posted an article that says In-store pickup option will be unavailable for pre-order.

http://9to5mac.com/2015/03/26/apple-watch-launch-availability/

Can anyone else confirm that? If so that stinks. I hate the risk of home delivery.

I wonder if we will be able to make a reservation for after the Watch's release here in the UK and then buy one there and then. For example i can't get to an Apple store until the 25th of April because i'm at university and work, so i wonder if it would be possible for me to book a reservation for the 25th of April and go to the Apple store, try the one i want on and then buy it along with any additional bands i may like?? i'm hoping this is the case other wise i'm going to have to just hope there will be enough SS with leather loop available for when i go :(

Is there a way to know if it's FedEx or ups?

How do you know if it's FedEx or ups or usps?
Is there a way to find out delivery times for each company in my area?

You will know which one when Apple sends you the tracking number. I know my delivery times because I get lots of deliveries. Tracking also should let you know when the item is 'on truck for delivery'

I was planing on having it shipped to my work anyways. It is safe and someone is always there 24 hrs a day.

FedEx and UPS both deliver around 11:00 am.

I wanted to avoid the crowds. I will probably stop by the Manhattan Beach Apple Store after work to check out the accessories.

Gutted at this news. Booked the day off to go pick it up from the store early as hate waiting around for the delivery guys here in the UK.

Does anyone know if you preorder in store from the 10th, you can collect in store on the 24th? If so, I might order online on the 10th as soon as preorders open and then head into the store to place an order and cancel my online order.

Does anyone know if it's possible to cancel online preorders?

Oh, and totally appreciate this is #FirstWorldproblems.

You can cancel online preorders up to a point. Usually several days before the ship date when the order has been processed and is preparing for shipment you can no longer do this.

Thieves will be out in force, like they do at Christmas time, following UPS trucks and watching the driver leave packages at doors... So they can swoop in and help themselves to your shiny new watch.

Do not let that get delivered to your home if you're not going to be home.

It's a poorly written article since it is sort of contradictory.

That being said, I will preorder at midnight and then schedule an appointment for fitting and possibly order for store pickup.
