Theres no optical output socket on my MBP but there was definately one on my old Powerbook. Why did they decide to take it out and is there no way I can use optical audio?

I have a 15inch 2.16ghz MBP

Here's a graphical representation of the answer.

Apple just combined the headphones jack and optical audio output. Same thing applies to the input. It's a "combined optican digital input/audio line in (minijack), according to http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs.html

Sorry to bump an old-ish thread, but does anyone know where I can get one of these adapters and how much they cost? I looked on the Apple site and they don't have one (unless I've missed it some how) and Radioshack.com has one I think, but it's $40, and surely a simple adapter can't cost that much...

I got a 3 meter optical cable with 2 adapters included in the package for £12.99 (about $25.00).

Here you go.

Thank you for the link expergo, but do you have any information on an actual adapter? I already have a 3ft optical cable that I use for my Xbox 360 and PS2, so It would be much more convenient to just have an adapter for the MBP and switch the cables from device to device instead of switching the cables on the back of the control panel of my Logitech Z5500's.

Is this what I would need?
