iOS 8 has a neat feature where you can request that rubbish mobile sites are replaced by a regular desktop site. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work.
Previously, if you had an image on such a site, you could copy it, and then paste it into the address field, which would actually paste the image's URL into the browser. Although you can still do the copy operation, the paste doesn't work any more.
That means that for the kind of website that doesn't allow you to zoom, it's not possible to open the image in a new tab and zoom in.
