I have one of those simple ZR series camcorders from Canon. I've had it a little over two years without much use and I am now confronted with blackness instead of images when I try to record. Sometimes it goes away if I remove the tape and re-insert it.

Will a simple cleaning tape solve this?

I hope to be corrected, but it may be your sensor. I'm not sure what kind of remedy there is for this besides replacing the camcorder (or taking it back to the retailer if you have the extended warranty).

my old JVC had head problems and recorded video with lots of colored blocks

or just a full screen for green or blue.
if you are not getting blocks on your pictures like the one above & its a clear cut picture or no picture it sound more like a connection problem, would be worth getting it looked at by a professional.
