I took the advice here and copied my iPhoto library onto the external HD I use for my TM backups. It was only 24 Gigs, compared to some of you guys with twice that. It took abotu 30 minutes to back up the file.
Anyhow, I did that and then finished the install of iPhoto '11 by letting it do its little reconfiguration thing. It went quickly. It took about 10 minutes or so, if that.
I've opened iPhoto '11, test shared a pic with my Facebook, and otherwise poked around the features just a little bit with out any apparent issues or difficulties. I really don't have a good, easy way to determine if I lost any photos or anything else.
It seems to me that it is going to be a matter of simply learning a new GUI, which is what I have to do all the time, like when I switched to Mac from PC, when I run a new application that makes no intuitive sense (Hello iBank, I'm talking about you!), or I'm learning my way around native Apple Mac apps.
Anyhow, I hope more of the rest of you have good luck with your upgrade install.
