No prompt to backup before full restore

I don't know if this has been discussed but I can't seem to find anything on this.

I was prompted to do a full restore on my iPhone 3GS. When I plug the phone in it is not recognized by my machine, it only recoginized it as a random iPhone and only has the option to restore, but not to sync. (Screenshot 1)

So when I press restore, it does not prompt to back up, it just asks if I'm sure I want to restore since it'll delete everything. (screenshot 2)

I wanted to save some photos on the phone. Am I out of luck? Is there anything else I can do?
