No red dot for notifications

I posted this in the mail notifications issue thread but wanted to post this separately in case it’s a different issue. Just for mail notifications, the red dot does not appear for unread emails. I get the haptic touch and can see the email if I check it right away. However, I am unable to pull down the Notification Center to see the unread email later. Not sure why that is. Anyone have any thoughts?
