I was looking at the print on the back of the iPhone 3G and compared it to the original iPhone and notice there isn't a serial printed on it. I find this rather interesting move on apples part. Whenever I have had my iPhone replaced, they looked at the serial on the back to pull up the info about it. Now they will probably have to go into the about menu. But this brings up another problem. What if the iPhone is completely fried and won't turn on at all? I guess Apple will have to look up the serial by Name or phone number.

Hang on to your box. at worst case, the serial number is printed on the bottom.

I have a feeling Apple did this to assist with the refurb process. If I remember right, there were all kinds of problems with refurbs getting new IMEIs and serial numbers. Not printing them on the back allows Apple to swap out external casings without having to worry that the internal numbers don't match the external.

They know all about your phone because you are required to activate your phone with them. They can look up when your iPhone was purchased and activated based on your name or phone number.
