Canada
I am a Canadian travelling down to Florida this month and with my normal plan I have unlimited texting in both Canada and the USA. To avoid data charges, I was told to turn off 3G. However, when I do that, I am left with one bar or "No Service" (which are pretty much the same) and am unable to send texts (haven't tried phone calls but am expecting the same result).

Any suggestions? I've tried rebooting and everything.

To avoid data charges, you would want to turn off "Cellular Data". You can still use data over non 3G service ie, (EDGE). It will be slow, 75 - 150 kbps., but data will still work. You can have 3G on as long as Cellular Data is off, and you should be good. Use wifi in the hotels for your data needs.

Are you still in Canada at the moment? I believe that some of the operators there don't have 2G, which might explain the issue. Which operator are you with?

This is exactly what I wanted. Tried it, it worked. Thanks!
